The International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet or simply the Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, commonly known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, is the most widely used set of clear-code words for communicating the letters of the Roman alphabet.
It is used for radio communication, especially in aviation, maritime, and military applications. The NATO phonetic alphabet is a spelling alphabet, a set of words used instead of letters in oral communication. Application of this alphabet reduces the chance of misunderstanding in case of low quality transmission, interference and other communication problems.
Each word or code word stands for its initial letter (alphabetical "symbol"). The 26 code words in the NATO phonetic alphabet are assigned to the 26 letters of the English alphabet in alphabetical order.
