PowerDev.Tools is up!

PowerDev.Tools is up!

It's up!

It took me a while to get everything up and running, but I am happy to announce that the website and the PowerDev.Tools App are finally up and running.

I am excited to share my thoughts and ideas with you all.

What it does?

PowerDev.Tools is a collection of smaller utilities that all developers need from time to time. How often? Well, I don't know about you, but I use them every day. In fact, I first created this App, then I worked on the landing page and used PowerDev.Tools to help me get it done.

The tools I used the most while working on this project are: JSON Formatter, SVG to React Component, Image to Data URL and NanoID Generator.

Why did I do it?

The story of the projects starts in 2004. At that time I was working a lot with PHP and emails. Back then if you wanted to send an email with anything more than a few lines of plain english text, you had to write a lot of code, and usually familiar with the SMTP protocol, MIME, quoted-printable encoding and so on. On top of that, UTF-8 was not really popular so fighting with ISO and CP encoding was a daily thing.

Even if you were working with a library that did most of the heavy lifting itself, debugging an email message was a pain. You had to save the message to a file, open it in a text editor, extract different parts of the message and decode them.

I was tired of that, so I created a simple web page that allowed me to execute different parts of this process manually. Over the years I added more and more tools to it as my needs changed.

Then my line of work changed when I moved to more IT related job, and after some time I lost the source code of my tool. I've noticed it only when I needed it again. So I decided to recreate it from scratch, but this time I wanted to make it better, more user-friendly and available online, not only on my private server. And this is how ToolsPortal.net was born. Unfortunately, I only ported a few tools I was using at that point, and I didn't have time to work on more.

Recently I've learned that some people cannot use it because of the security policies of their companies. They need licenses for every piece of software they use, and some of them prohibit the use of online tools all together.

This is why I decided to create PowerDev.Tools to address those issues:

  • No tracking
  • No ads
  • No cookies
  • Clear licensing terms
  • Focus on modern tools

What's next?

I have a lot of ideas for new tools and improvements to the existing ones. I will be adding them as I go, so stay tuned!

What to expect in the near future:

  • PWA for the App, so you can use it offline.
  • Standalone binaries for Windows, Linux and MacOS.
  • Context-sensitive code generator for different languages for many of the tools.
  • Port tools from ToolsPortal.net.
  • More tools!

Subscribe to the newsletter to get updates when that happens.
